About these visas
As the name says this type of visa is temporary. The Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) allows employers to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to come to Australia and work. These workers are sponsored when there is a lack of skilled workers in Australia to fill the required positions. You can stay from 2 years or up to 4 years depending on the specified criteria. As with all visas to Australia health and character criteria apply. There are different stream types within this visa, and each has a different set of requirements.
The streams are:
- The Short-Term stream
- The Medium-Term stream
- The Labour Agreement stream

The Short-Term Stream
The applicant is to have an occupation which is listed on the skilled occupation list. The stay allowed is 2 years and up to 4 years if there is an exception listed.
The applicant must be chosen to work in an occupation which is on the eligible short-term skilled occupations list and have at least 2 years of work in this field. Meet the minimum standards of English language proficiency and only work for the sponsored employer (unless exempt).
The Medium-Term Stream
This requires the applicant to have an occupation that is either the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL). The stay allowed is up to four years.
The applicant must be sponsored to work in the occupation on the list of eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations. As with the Short-Term Stream this visa requires the applicant to have at least 2 years of experience in the occupation or related field. The applicant can only work for the sponsored employer unless exempt and there are other conditions such as language proficiency.
The Labour Agreement Stream
The Labour Agreement Stream requires the employer of the eligible applicant to have a Labour Agreement. The Labour agreements are developed between the Australian Government and the employer. This agreement must be current and in effect. The stay allowed is up to four years.
The applicant must have the relevant skillset as prescribed by the skilled occupation list and have the prerequisite 2 years in the nominated occupation on the Labour Agreement.
