This visa enables people to go to see family or friends, take a tour as a visitor, go on a cruise, or engage in any activities other than business or medical treatment. Up to 3 months of study or training are allowed. If the primary purpose of the visit is education, a student visa may be more appropriate.
Work is not permitted under this visa.

Cruise

A visa is required for cruises that visit Australia. When the round-trip cruise visit either terminates or begins with visits to an Australian port, the time spent on the cruise is considered to have been spent in Australia, and the duration of the stay period on the visa is not resumed. For cruise travellers, ask the provider of the cruise or tour about whether your cruise is considered a round-trip cruise.

Duration of stay

This is a provisional visa.
The length of stay is indicated by the grant letter and differs with case to case. Some examples of the considerations that are looked at in deciding the length of stay include:

  • Purpose of visiting Australia
  • Intended duration.

The visa might allow either multiple entry or no travel. If issued as a multiple entry, the holder may leave and re-enter Australia at any time up to the time at which the holder seeks readmission, provided at that time that they hold a valid visa.
Applicants who wish to enter Australia

  • As the holder of one or more visitor visas
  • And for more than 12 consecutive months may be required to demonstrate exceptional circumstances.

Extended or permanent stay will require another application for a visa that would allow such conditions.

Extend Your Stay

You are not allowed to stay in Australia any longer with this renewed visa. Instead, you will need to apply for a new visa.

Including Family Members

Family members are not eligible to be included within your visa application.
Each family member, including those whose names appear on your passport, will have to lodge a separate application.

Eligible applicants may apply for this visa in Australia. Applicants must be in Australia at the time of the decision on their application.
For a new application, a decision not to impose a "no further stay" condition, for example, condition 8503 may be sought in certain circumstances.

Travel

If you have a multiple entry visa, you can travel out of Australia and return to Australia before your visa expires and becomes invalid.
If your visa is a single-entry visa, and you travel out of Australia, you will not be allowed to return unless you apply for another visa.

You are allowed to volunteer, but you cannot work in Australia on a Visitor visa.

  • Single/Multiple Entry: If it is a single/multiple entry visa, you can go outside of Australia and come back as long as it is still valid.
  • No Travel: If the visa does not allow one to return then he/she has to apply for a new visa in order to come back to Australia.
