Temporary Skill Shortage visa - Subsequent entrant (subclass 482)

Home / Temporary Skill Shortage visa – Subsequent entrant (subclass 482)

With this visa, family members of existing TSS or subclass 457 visa holders are able to travel to Australia with their loved ones.

Purpose

Allows foreign workers to fill temporary skill shortages in Australian industries.

Eligibility

Stay

Up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders).

Cost

Starts from AUD3,115.00.

Processing Times

Use the visa processing time guide tool for an estimate.

Benefits

  • Work for the sponsoring employer.
  • Study in Australia (without government assistance).
  • Travel to and from Australia freely.
  • Potential pathway to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme.

Important

Read the full conditions and check eligibility before applying.

NOTE: The charges outlined above are exclusive of ISEMS fees, which apply separately.

Usually, you apply for your visa at the same time as the primary applicant. Separate applications are required in certain situations, though. This could occur at:

  • The main applicant is still waiting on their TSS visa application.
  • A subclass 457 or TSS visa has already been awarded to the primary applicant

In these situations, you have to apply for a visa on your own as a subsequent entrant if you want to join the primary applicant.

You will need to submit an application as a subsequent entrant and include a letter from the sponsor attesting to their intent to sponsor you as a family member. By doing this, it is guaranteed that the sponsor is aware of every member of the family that is supported.

Talk to the sponsor about this before submitting your application for a visa for a subsequent entrant.

With this visa, you can

    • Live and work in Australia.
    • Note: you will not be receiving government support while you study.
    • For as long as your visa is valid, you are free to travel to and from Australia.
    • Apply for permanent residence if you are qualified.

Conditions: The terms of your visa will be specific. Consult your visa grant letter or make use of the VEVO tool to view these conditions.

Cost

Visa Fees for Subsequent Entrants:

  • TSS Visa Holders: Depending on the stream (short-term, medium-term, or labour agreement) of the primary visa holder's TSS visa, there is a fee for a subsequent entrant application.
  • Subclass 457 Visa Holders: The following formula is used to determine the fees for subsequent entrants if the primary visa holder is in possession of a subclass 457 visa:
    • The base application fee is $3,115.00.
    • AUD 3,115.00 is the additional applicant fee (18+).
    • Under-18 applicant fees extra: AUD 780.00

Note: The base fee will be charged, not the additional charge, if the only applicant is under the age of 18.

Additional expenses: Health checks, police clearances, and biometrics might also cost money.

Visa Pricing Estimator: Use the Visa pricing estimator to get an idea of how much your visa will cost. Please be aware that these additional expenses are not included in the estimator.

For what duration are you able to stay?

This visa is just transitory. As long as your visa is valid, you are allowed to remain in Australia.

Remain longer

If the primary visa holder wishes to remain in Australia to continue working for their current employer and your visa is about to expire:

  • You will need to apply for a new visa, and the employer will need to submit a new nomination.

Additionally, the primary applicant's employer may be able to support them for permanent residence by using the:

Other skilled work visas may be available to the principal applicant. To learn about your employment options, use your visa finder.

Add more family members

Those who are members of the primary subclass 457 or TSS visa holder's family unit are eligible to apply for this visa. Family members must fit your character and health requirements in order to apply for a visa.

Primary visa must have been submitted or decided

A primary visa applicant cannot add family members to their TSS visa application once it has been submitted. The primary visa must have been submitted or decided.

If you were not listed as a family member in the primary visa applicant's application and they have already submitted their application, you should submit a subsequent entrant application.

Their application for a subclass 457 or TSS visa is still being processed, or you would like to accompany the primary visa applicant in Australia if they have been granted a subclass 457 or TSS visa.

Apply From

When a visa application is submitted and a decision is made, the applicant may either be in Australia or outside of it, while immigration clearance remains pending.
In Australia, if you are applying, you need to have:
a substantive visa, also known as a Bridging A, B, or C bridge
Even if your substantive visa has a no-stay restriction attached, you might still be eligible to apply.

Processing Times

Use the visa processing time guide tool to get an idea of how long it will take to process this visa. The processing times for recently selected applications will be displayed here. It is not application-specific; it is merely a guide.

Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and due to unique circumstances, such as the following, actual processing times may differ.

  • whether your application is complete and has all required supporting documentation submitted.
  • how soon you answer inquiries for more information
  • how long it takes to obtain additional information from outside sources, especially when it comes to national security, health, and character requirements, and how long it takes to conduct the necessary checks on the supporting documentation that has been provided.

Further inquiries could be made. A decision can be based on the information provided, with no obligation to request additional information or documents. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all necessary corroborating or supporting materials are included with the application.

Your obligations

All visa requirements must be fulfilled, and you and your family must abide by Australian law. Check the conditions that may be associated with this visa.

Travel

As long as the visa is valid, you are free to leave Australia and come back as often as you like.
The duration of your stay abroad does not prolong your visa.

Visa label

Your visa will be electronically linked to your passport. There will be no physical label in your passport.
If the visa is granted, a grant notification letter will be sent, containing the visa grant number. This number can be used to check visa details and conditions through VEVO.

NOTE: The charges outlined above are exclusive of ISEMS fees, which apply separately.

Consider the age

Possess a parent or spouse with a subclass 482 or TSS

You will be granted a subclass 482 if your application is accepted and your parent or partner has a 457.

Be nominated by the primary visa holder's sponsor

To include you as a family member in the nomination, the sponsor of the primary applicant (or visa holder) with the most recent approved nomination must consent (or have consented) in writing.

Have health insurance

  • You are responsible for your own healthcare costs while in Australia. Medical insurance can help protect you financially.
  • To obtain this visa, you must have adequate health insurance coverage for your entire stay. This coverage should include medically necessary treatment and transportation.
  • Refer to the guidelines for what is considered adequate health insurance.
  • Learn more about health insurance options for overseas visitors.
    Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements:
  • Some countries have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Australia. Check with Services Australia for details on these agreements.

Meet the health requirement

You have to fulfil the health requirements. Health examination results are usually good for a year after they are obtained.

Important: To speed up the visa application process, schedule your medical exams in advance of applying for a visa.

Meet the character requirement

You must meet the character criteria, as well as any family members who apply for the visa with you and are at least 16 years old.

Important: If you are sponsored by an accredited sponsor, you do not need to get police certificates from any country other than Australia as long as you have an attached letter from your sponsor attesting to your good character and lack of criminal conviction. However, you still have to give any necessary Australian police clearances when asked or when the situation calls for it.

Be the holder of an appropriate visa

You must possess one of the following if you are applying in Australia:

  • a substantive visa
  • a bridging visa A, B, or C.

Have complied with previous visa conditions

You must have substantially complied with all restrictions that applied to your last substantive visa or bridging visa held if you are in Australia at the time of decision.

Have not broken any laws pertaining to "paying for visa sponsorship."

Whether the event is held or not, asking for, offering, receiving, or giving a benefit in exchange for a sponsorship-related event is referred to as paying for visa sponsorship. You and any supporting candidates cannot have participated in any such behaviour during the previous three years. If you have engaged in such conduct and the Minister deems it reasonable to ignore it, you may still meet this requirement.

Must not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused

Your immigration history will be taken into account when a decision is made on your application. If you have had a visa cancelled or refused, you may not be eligible for this visa.

However, in certain cases, you may still be able to apply for a permanent visa despite a visa cancellation or refusal. See Limitations on applications in Australia for more details.

If you are applying from outside Australia, refer to Can I go to Australia.

For immigration assistance, refer to Who can help with your visa application.

Be free from obligations to the Australian government

If you owe the Australian government money, you or any family members (including those who do not apply for the visa with you) must have paid it back or made arrangements to do so.

Sign the statement of Australian values.

When you accept or sign an Australian Values Statement, you, if you are eighteen years of age or older, must attest that you will uphold Australian law and the Australian way of life.

NOTE: The charges outlined above are exclusive of ISEMS fees, which apply separately.
