About this visa
The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a points-tested stream and allows invited workers with the prerequisite skills to live and work in Australia. This visa is for workers who are not sponsored by family members or employers. Family members can also be included in the application. The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) gives you the right to full workers rights and the right to enrol in Medicare, which is Australia’s Healthcare access. You may also be eligible for certain types of Social Security payments. This visa also gives you right to apply for Citizenship of Australia. The approx. time of processing is 13 months.
Who is eligible for this visa?
There are strict eligibility criteria which must be taken into consideration when looking at this option. The potential applicant must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply for the visa. You may be required to have a Skills Assessment; these are issued by the approved bodies for your relevant qualification. Each of these authorities has their own procedure and way of assessing eligibility, the minimum point score must be 65. To submit the EOI you must also be under the age of 45 and have a competent command of the English Language.

Subject to criteria, you and the family members on your visa can apply for Australian Citizenship.
